Big News from GenCon
It’s confirmed! Next up is The Mage of the Mirror Quest Pack. Originally known as the Elf Quest Pack.
This information was gathered from some photos taken at GenCon. First off we have a display showing a wide variety of HeroQuest elements from various Quest Packs, including some that are no longer available: the Mythic Tier items, and The Commander of the Guardian Knights.
Since they are advertising items that are not available anymore, we’re not exactly sure what this means. You can clearly see the Warlock, Druid, and Bard heroes, as well as the Dragon, and the alternate sculpts for the other HeroQuest monsters. It’s possible that this means these items will be, once again, available for purchase, perhaps even at the retail level. This is purely speculation on my part.
Also on display is the Rogue Heir of Elethorn, and it looks like some of the skill cards are flipped face-up. We might actually be able to have a glimpse at what this hero can do. If someone attending GenCon could hare a closer image of these, that would be great. I want to start play testing this character immediately!
Mage of the Mirror is now available for preorder at Amazon.
The Mage of the Mirror – Remade
Here’s the really fun part, this display also has a glimpse of the never before seen Elf Quest Pack – The Mage of the Mirror.
This is exciting to a lot of fans, especially me. I never actually had a chance to play this one growing up. It’s the one Quest Pack that we didn’t have. Everything I know about it I learned from Ye Olde Inn, one of the greatest sources of HeroQuest content and resources after the original game went out of print.
I think I was in the same boat as a lot of fans, I’ve heard that the Mage of the Mirror Quest Pack was not as widespread as the others and fewer people had it. It is certainly the most expensive one to get your hands on if you are browsing around eBay.
Here we have representations of all the same components that came in the original Elf Quest Pack, with some minor differences:
The included Hero is Male instead of Female, this makes sense as the Elf hero in the Game System is Female and historically, the Hero Quest Packs have included opposite gendered heroes. We can also see that the stats on the Ogre have been updated. Possibly to decrease the difficulty of the Mage of the Mirror Quest Pack? Now instead of having a whopping 10 body points, the Ogres have 5 body points.
We can also see re-sculpts of the furniture. There appears to be a re-sculpt of almost every piece from the Game System, there are only a couple that are missing. There are also a few new plastic doors. The mirrors appear to still be made out of cardboard.
A Clue for the Future
It’s interesting that we see new furniture in the Mage of the Mirror Quest Pack. This was actually hinted at a while ago by Zargon himself on Twitter, I’m going to have to start paying more attention to Twitter Zargon:
This also gives a hint about possible expansions in the future. There are two expansions that were planned, but never completed: The Wizard Quest Pack, and the Dwarf Quest Pack. This Tweet seems to imply that maybe a Dwarf Quest Pack is in the works, and may also contain redesigned furniture as well.
The only thing that I can’t see in the photo, that I was expecting to see, is: a new set of combat and movement dice for the Elf! In the Frozen Horror Quest Pack, we get a new set of combat and movement dice that are themed around the Quest Pack. I don’t see them here. So, either Avalon Hill is choosing not to be consistent with their products, or they’re keeping this a secret! I’m hoping for the second option, I really want a mystical green set of dice!
There is no information yet on a release date.

In case you missed it, check out the newly released information on The Rogue Heir of Elethorn.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the Rogue Heir of Elethorn! It’s available for pre-order now at Amazon.
Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you again soon!
Awesome! Great article!
Thanks, I appreciate that. Glad you liked it.
Thanks for the news! We played the Elf Quest solo quest a very long time ago, and my player said 10 Body Points was way too much. I’m in the USA and got all the expansions when I was a kid, and hope they’ll eventually release the UK-only expansions!
I only had BQP, KK, and WotWL when I was a kid. Really looking forward to this one. I too hope they release the UK expansions, would be great to be able to play those ones with NA rules without having to convert anything ourselves.
We didn’t get furniture in FH, but did get the ice themed meta components. This round we get probably half if the furniture (elf flavored), and no meta. Dwarf pack will probably have the other half of the furniture (Dwarf flavored), and Wizard pack will have new meta components. 😀
I’m envisioning stone tables included in the Dwarf Quest Pack! Can’t wait to see what else they have in store. GenCon has just started and already there is so much!
hope the make a dwarven weapon rack, stone tables, a dwarven forge, a free standing secret door, maybe a mining cart, alchemist bench, and a stone throne.
Thanks for the information! I’ll be eager to see when this quest becomes available for pre-order. Soon I hope! That said, I have placed a pre-order request for Rogue Heir of Elethorn.
