HeroQuest, on screen! HeroQuest: Digital Edition has been announced, bringing the classic dungeon crawler to PC. With online multiplayer, a playable Zargon, and a Quest Editor, there's plenty to get excited about. Let's take a look some of the details and HeroQuest's long digital history!

After more than three decades, we're finally getting another officially licensed HeroQuest Digital game!

During The MIX Fall Online Showcase on October 16, HeroQuest: Digital Edition was officially announced! Developed by Nomad Games and published by Balor Games, the game will bring the classic dungeon-crawling experience back to our computer screens.

For those of us who have been following HeroQuest for years, this is pretty exciting news! We've seen several fan-made attempts at recreating the experience on screen, but now we're getting something official!

The announcement trailer features Mentor narrating the opening text from the Game System Rulebook. Unfortunately, there wasn't much gameplay footage to look at in the trailer itself.

Fortunately, there's more to see on the Steam store page, including a collection of gameplay screenshots. So far, it looks pretty good if you ask me!

What Can We Expect from HeroQuest: Digital Edition?

More information about HeroQuest: Digital Edition can be found on both Balor Game's website and the Steam Store page.

HeroQuest: Digital Edition will support both solo play and online multiplayer. You can take control of all four heroes yourself, or team up with friends to explore the dungeons together.

But here's something interesting! A fifth player can take on the role of Zargon! Instead of leaving all the evil scheming to the computer, you can have a real person controlling the forces of Dread. I don't know about you, but I think that sounds like a lot of fun!

The game will feature turn-based combat, with dice rolls, character abilities, and tactical positioning playing a role in overcoming Zargon's minions.

And here's one of the features I'm most excited about. A Quest Editor! Something fans have been asking for since HeroQuest was rereleased in 2021!

Players will be able to create their own quests and share them with the community through mod.io integration. Just imagine all the custom adventures that could come out of this! HeroQuest fans have been creating their own quests for decades, so having an official way to build and share them digitally is a pretty exciting addition.

Of course, we don't know how extensive the editor will be yet. Will we be able to create our own monsters, artifacts, and other custom content? Or will we be limited to the components included with the game?

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see!

You can find more information on Balor Games' official HeroQuest page.

A Digital Adventure, More Than 30 Years in the Making!

The last time we saw an officially licensed HeroQuest video game was a long time ago!

Way back in 1991, the original HeroQuest computer game was released on several home computer platforms, including the Amiga, DOS, Commodore 64, Atari ST, and ZX Spectrum.

There was even a version in development for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), though this one never made it to retail. Playable prototypes have since found their way into the hands of fans!

Then, in 1994, we got a sequel, HeroQuest II: Legacy of Sorasil! This saw the story and game mechanics change with the introduction of new adventures and additional character classes. Players could create a party of four heroes from eight different classes. Legacy of Sorasil was released on the Amiga and Amiga CD32.

And then... well, things got pretty quiet during HeroQuest's roughly 30-year hiatus from retail. That's not to say fans were sitting around doing nothing!

Over the years, the community has produced several fan-made digital adaptations. Some have attempted to faithfully recreate the original experience, and others have introduced their own ideas and features.

And various fanmade versions of HeroQuest have appeared on Tabletop Simulator.

I think these projects deserve a lot of credit. Some incredibly talented people have dedicated countless hours to bringing these games to life, often without expecting anything in return.

I've always enjoyed seeing what the community comes up with. It's pretty amazing what a group of dedicated fans can accomplish. The community kept an entire game franchise alive for 30 years, for some of us, it's like the game never went out-of-print!

Will this be the official digital adaptation that fans have been hoping for?

More HeroQuest News!? What's Under That Sheet?

As if a new digital game wasn't enough, there's been quite a bit of other news about HeroQuest lately!

A new dice set and dice tray were recently revealed from Fanroll, giving fans a few more accessories to add to their collections.

Here's what the new dice and tray look like. They can be found for preorder at various online retailers, you might have to search around.

But that's not all! There's something else being revealed on October 22.

A short teaser video was released showing someone lifting a sheet off a mysterious box.

All we really got to see was a tiny portion of one corner. It's almost certianly going to be an expansion box, but it's hard to tell if it will be a large pack or small quest pack. The only clue we can see is what appear to be the letters "ture" visible on the corner.

Adventure, perhaps!? This doesn't seem to fit what we usually see in the bottom corner of the box, which historically has been information about needing a Game System to play the adventure. So this is is still up in the air!

Or maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see!

Whatever is hiding under that sheet, we'll find out more on October 22.

This is a separate announcement from the new digital game revealed, but it looks like we'll have more than one thing to look forward to!

Check out the teaser at Avalon Hill's Instagram.

Looking Ahead

There's been a lot of talk going around lately, well not just lately, about fears of the end of HeroQuest! I've never seen evidence of this, its just something some fans are worrying a little too much about if you ask me. I don't think HeroQuest is going anywhere, anytime soon.

A new officially licensed digital game, some new accessories, and whatever is hiding under that sheet! It's shaping up to be an interesting month for fans and I think this can reassure everyone that HeroQuest will be sticking around for a very long time.

What do you think about HeroQuest: Digital edition? Are you excited to see the franchise coming to digital? And what do you think is hiding under that mysterious sheet?

Let me know your thoughts!

The Digital Edition of HeroQuest can be followed on Steam.

Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you again soon!
