What Is HeroQuest: First Light?
First Light is a lower-cost, stand-alone version of the HeroQuest Game System. It contains the board, rules, cards, dice, doors, furniture, monsters, and four Heroes needed to begin playing. The Heroes and dragon are plastic miniatures. The monsters, doors, and furniture use full-colour cardboard standees held in plastic movers.
The core rules are the same as the 2021 Game System. First Light is not a shortened demo or a separate rules edition. Its new Quest Book provides an alternate starting campaign that takes place around the same period as the original Game System adventures.

Start With the Official Rules
The First Light rulebook teaches the same movement, combat, searching, traps, spells, equipment, death, and between-quest rules used by the 2021 Game System. Its presentation is written for new players and includes more setup guidance, examples, reference material, and reminders for Zargon.
The official download contains the Game System rules. The First Light Quest Book is supplied in the box and should remain with Zargon. The Companion App can run the quests when everyone at the table wants to control Heroes.
Finding First Light
First Light was designed as a more accessible entry into HeroQuest. Availability varies by region, and some stores may list imported language editions. Check the product language before ordering.

What Comes in the Box?
First Light replaces most of the Game System's plastic monsters and furniture with cardboard standees. That keeps the box smaller and the entry price lower without removing the core cards, board features, doors, monsters, furniture, or campaign tools.

- Alternate Hero sculpts expand player choices
- The dragon can be reused in custom quests
- Game System miniatures can replace standees
Setting Up Your First Quest
- Prepare the standees. Place each monster, door, and furniture piece into a plastic mover. Keep pieces sorted by type so Zargon can reveal rooms quickly.
- Choose Zargon and the Heroes. One player runs the hidden quest. The other players divide the Barbarian, Dwarf, Elf, and Wizard between them. A player may control more than one Hero.
- Use the board side named by the quest. First Light uses both sides of its board. Confirm the required layout before placing the starting tile or doors.
- Prepare cards and character sheets. Separate the Treasure, Equipment, Artifact, Monster, elemental spell, and Dread spell cards. Record each Hero's starting statistics and weapon.
- Read the first quest before the group arrives. Zargon should review The Border Fort of In-Gulden, its map events, Sir Ragnar's introduction, and the timing for revealing its special notes.
How the Heroes Play
First Light uses the standard HeroQuest turn. A Hero may move and then perform one action, or perform one action and then move. Movement cannot be split around the action.
The six Hero actions are attacking, casting a spell, searching for treasure, searching for traps, searching for secret doors, and disarming a discovered trap. Opening a door does not use the Hero's action.
- Barbarian begins with the Broadsword and has the strongest starting attack.
- Dwarf begins with a Handaxe in First Light and remains the party's natural trap specialist.
- Elf begins with a Shortsword and one elemental spell group.
- Wizard begins with a Dagger and the remaining three elemental spell groups.
- Search carefully before rushing into unknown rooms or opening trapped treasure.
- Spend gold together so front-line defense, trap tools, and ranged attacks improve across the party.
The rulebook recommends Fire spells for the Wizard and Earth spells for the Elf during a group's first quest. Experienced players may divide the spell groups normally.
For a broader explanation of movement, combat, searching, spells, and death, see the Game System Hero rules.
Playing Through the First Light Quest Book
The Quest Book contains 10 new adventures written by Stephen Baker. They form an alternative opening campaign rather than a continuation of the original Game System. The story takes place around the same time and introduces new Heroes.
The first quest, The Border Fort of In-Gulden, sends the Heroes to investigate Sir Ragnar's missing scouts. Later quests use the two board layouts, recurring enemies, unusual events, named foes, and a climactic dragon encounter.
The campaign was written to teach through play. Early quests introduce the standard turn, exploration, line of sight, combat, treasure, and searching. Later adventures ask the group to manage more complicated objectives and staged events without changing the underlying Game System rules.

Where First Light Fits
First Light sits beside the HeroQuest Game System as an alternate starting campaign. It is not placed after the original 14 quests. New players can begin with either box and move into the larger expansion line after their chosen opening campaign.
Questions or Corrections?
This guide is a practical introduction. The official rulebook, Quest Book, cards, and Companion App remain the final sources for setup, named enemies, campaign events, dragon rules, and quest-specific instructions.
