What Is Return of the Witch Lord?

Return of the Witch Lord was released in 1991 near the same time as Kellar's Keep. The modern Avalon Hill and Hasbro edition arrived in 2021 with redesigned artwork, updated terminology, and miniatures that match the current Game System.

The Game System establishes that the Witch Lord survived the battle at Barak Tor. This campaign follows that unresolved story as the Heroes travel to his underground fortress and confront the undead army gathering there.

Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord are both introduced by the Game System epilogue. Their stories can be treated as concurrent adventures, though many groups play Kellar's Keep first and Return of the Witch Lord second.

The expansion does not add a new standard monster type. Its 16 extra undead miniatures let Zargon build larger groups of Skeletons, Zombies, and Mummies using the Monster cards from the Game System.

Finding Return of the Witch Lord

Return of the Witch Lord requires the HeroQuest Game System or another compatible HeroQuest base set. The expansion supplies the campaign, extra undead figures, dungeon doors, cards, and tiles, but it relies on the board, dice, furniture, core cards, and rules from the base game.

Starting the Campaign

Return of the Witch Lord continues the story established by the Game System. The same Heroes can carry their surviving equipment, artifacts, gold, and recorded progress into the opening quest.

  1. Complete the Game System. The final quests and epilogue establish the Witch Lord's survival and his retreat from Barak Tor.
  2. Choose the campaign order. Play Return of the Witch Lord directly after the Game System or place Kellar's Keep before it as this site's suggested order does.
  3. Keep the Hero records. Bring forward each surviving Hero's character sheet, equipment, artifacts, Spell Scrolls, and gold.
  4. Add the new cards and pieces. Keep the new Equipment and Artifact cards ready, along with the undead miniatures, doors, and tile sheet.
  5. Read the campaign introduction. Zargon explains the threat and the journey without revealing maps, monsters, traps, or quest notes.

New Mechanics and Dungeon Features

Entrance and Exit Doors

The campaign uses an iron Entrance door and wooden Exit door in place of the familiar spiral stairway. The Heroes begin outside the board and enter through the door shown on the quest map. Reaching the Exit may end a quest, but only after the stated objective has been completed.

Special Rooms and Tiles

  • Death Mist represents a dangerous supernatural hazard whose movement and effects are defined by the current quest.
  • Revolving Room changes orientation and can send Heroes through a different doorway than the one they expected.
  • Coffins mark tombs that may hide monsters, treasures, traps, or quest events.
  • Throne Room creates a distinct location used for major encounters and story objectives.
  • Pit Traps and Blocked Squares reshape corridors and limit routes through the fortress.
  • Secret Doors open hidden passages when the Heroes search and the quest map includes them.

Gold Found in Chests

The Quest Book recommends dividing large amounts of recovered gold among the Heroes. Groups that normally pool resources can continue managing purchases in the way that works best at their table.

Notes for Zargon

The following notes discuss hidden hazards, special rooms, named enemies, and quest rulings. Hero players can leave this section concealed.

Equipment, Artifacts, and Spell Scrolls

Return of the Witch Lord adds four Equipment cards and ten Artifact cards. Several of the artifacts are Spell Scrolls, giving a Hero access to a single spell without changing the Hero's normal spell selection.

When a quest awards a Spell Scroll, follow the Quest Book's instructions for selecting it. Record the scroll on the Hero's character sheet, then return the card to the appropriate group when instructed so it can remain available for later rewards.

A Spell Scroll is normally discarded from the Hero's inventory after the spell is cast. The scroll does not permanently add the spell to the Hero's spell groups. Card text and quest notes control timing, eligible targets, and any exception to normal spell rules.

Where Return of the Witch Lord Fits

View Quest Order

Return of the Witch Lord and Kellar's Keep both follow the Game System epilogue. Their stories can occur at roughly the same point in the timeline. The suggested order on this site places Kellar's Keep first, followed by Return of the Witch Lord, then Prophecy of Telor.
