Bastion of Dread
The Bastion of Dread is remembered in the chronicles as a grim underground fortress once held by the minions of the dark sorcerer Zargon. Hidden beneath the lands to the east, it served as a redoubt from which marauding tribes of orcs and goblins launched their raids upon the borders of the Realm. In those troubled days, travelers spoke of smoke on the horizon and of villages plundered by warbands bearing the symbols of Dread.
The stronghold itself was said to be hewn from the depths of the earth, a labyrinth of halls and chambers guarded by the creatures of Zargon’s host. Orcs and goblins swarmed its passages, while greater horrors—abominations and heavily armored Dread warriors—held command within its deeper vaults. These Dread warriors, corrupted humans clad in enchanted armor and empowered by forbidden magic, oversaw the fortress and directed the raids that plagued the countryside.
At the height of these depredations, the King of the Realm ordered that the Bastion be cleansed. Bands of proven heroes were dispatched eastward to descend into the hidden fortress and destroy its inhabitants. The king’s decree placed a bounty upon the heads of the monsters dwelling there, a measure intended both to encourage bold champions and to break the strength of the marauding hordes that sheltered within.
Accounts differ as to the exact fate of the Bastion thereafter. Some chronicles suggest it was scoured of life and abandoned, its halls left silent beneath the ground. Others hint that tunnels collapse and darkness conceal parts of the fortress still, leaving open the troubling possibility that remnants of the Dread host may yet haunt its forgotten passages.
