Improved HeroQuest Guides and New Hero Strategy Guides

4 minute read

The Game and Expansion guides have been updated and newly created Hero Strategy Guides added. Great for beginners and seasoned players.

Note: I realize that my little countdown banner was causing some significant issues on the site. Thanks to everyone who brought it to my attention, I’ve killed the banner, you can still see the redesign landing page here for more information on what’s coming to The Game Room.

Continuing on with the preview of the upcoming Elvyler’s Game Room relaunch on August 1, 2026; lets take a look at a new collection of HeroQuest Game and character guides for the four classic heroes.

These first 8 guides will be published on August 1 when the new site goes live.

This opening collection covers:

  1. HeroQuest – Game System Guide
  2. First Light – Game System Guide
  3. Kellar’s Keep – Quest Pack Guide
  4. Return of the Witch Lord – Quest Pack Guide
  5. The Barbarian – Hero Guide
  6. The Dwarf – Hero Guide
  7. The Elf – Hero Guide
  8. The Wizard – Hero Guide

These will be more than simple lists of the rules pasted from the rulebook, no that would be too easy. These guides give a quick introduction on getting started with each system/quest pack/hero, as well as information for Zargon on how to play each pack, and how to make the game interactive, fun, and challenging for each hero.

Guides for Both Sides of the Table

Each guide starts out with the basic information about the item and a quick way to navigate to each section:

Each guide introduces the heroes, monsters, components and adventures for within. The Game System guides (HeroQuest, and First Light) provide a foundation for the core HeroQuest experience in an approachable format, focusing on information to get players into the game.

Each Expansion guide focuses on additional rules and changes introduced in each Quest Pack. These guides are not intended to replace the official rules, but to help explain the information needed before a game begins.

Guidance for Zargon

Each guide has a special section for Zargon’s eyes only. Don’t worry, it’s hidden in plain view from hero players.

Each guide provides some insight for Zargon on how to use new rules introduced. Your job as Zargon is more than just placing monsters and killing heroes! Your role carries a great responsibility: manage enemies, reveal the board, present the story, set the pace for the adventure, and most importantly, make the game fun for your heroes.

Hero Strategy Guides

We’ll be launching with guides for the classic four heroes of the HeroQuest Game System. Each guide will explore how each hero works, what play styles and strategies suit them, and how they can contribute to the rest of the party.

The hero guides aren’t just for the players! Zargon can gain some insight from them too. Each guide includes a section for Zargon that offers tips to make the game fun, engaging and challenging for that character.

Each hero experiences danger in their own way. A situation that would outright kill a Wizard, might not hinder the Barbarian at all. The Zargon section will discuss ways to recognize each heroes strengths and place them in situations that make those strengths matter.

Coming soon to a Game Room Near You

This is only the beginning. These first 8 guides pave the way for more. I still have 8 more hero guides and 9 more Quest Pack guides to go. I have a start on the others, but they will take time to complete.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these ones. More exciting announcements about the relaunch to come!
